Te Matapihi ki te Ao Nui, the Wellington Central Library, is one of the city’s most recognisable public buildings. Designed by Athfield Architects and opened in 1991, it features Postmodern design elements like the curved glass façade and nīkau-palm columns. The library has been recommended for a Category 1 heritage listing, reflecting its cultural importance and architectural significance.

The library closed in 2019 due to seismic risks, particularly with its hollow-core floors. Since then, a major strengthening and refurbishment programme has been underway to make the building resilient, modern, and inclusive. The project was completed in late 2025 and was officially reopened to the public in March 2026.

Rockbond was proud to support LT McGuinness on the Wellington Central Library seismic strengthening project, supplying a comprehensive range of seismic strengthening and remediation solutions. Over 300 tonnes of structural cementitious and epoxy grouts were installed throughout the project, with Rockbond’s 1.04 GP Grout-Plus and 290/190 Epoxy Grout leading the way as standout performers.

Working alongside the LT McGuinness team was a seamless and highly collaborative experience. Their practical, solutions-focused approach enabled us to develop pragmatic installation methods that delivered meaningful savings in both time and cost, without compromising on performance.

Both 1.4 GP Grout-Plus and 290/190 Epoxy Grout are manufactured in New Zealand by Rockbond (Rockbind), providing high-spec structural performance while maintaining competitive pricing—an ideal combination for large-scale, technically demanding projects like this one.
