Project Details:

The old Wellington Town Hall, on the south side of Civic Square in Central Wellington, is more than a century old. It was closed to the public in 2013 because it was earthquake prone.

By law it had to be either demolished or have strengthening underway by the end of 2019. Demolition was not an option because of its heritage status.

Construction work on the strengthening of this iconic old building (Te Whare Whakarauiki) started in April 2019 after Naylor Love was appointed as the main construction contractor.

When it re-opens it will be a world-class musical and recording venue with improved rehearsal and performance space. It will be a base for civic and community events and part of a centre of musical excellence for New Zealand Symphony Orchestra (NZSO) and Victoria University of Wellington’s New Zealand School of Music Te Kōkī.

Being an old structure, it’s not a case of ‘anything will do’, our team have come up with a number of different solutions to solve the many and various structural challenges that this project has.

Our team will be working with the team at Naylors on this iconic heritage building for many months to come….it’s an awesome project to be involved with!
