Project Details:

The Karapiro Power Station is a hydroelectric power station at Karapiro on the Waikato River, just South of Cambridge. Karapiro was the second power station built in the Waikato hydro scheme, after Arapuni, with construction of the dam being completed in 1947.

Like all Hydro Dams, maintenance of the dam structure and spillway is absolutely critical. With millions of litres rushing down the spillway every time the gates are opened, it’s vital to make sure the slipway surface is as smooth as possible.

If there are any voids or cracks in the surface of the concrete, the water rushing down will rapidly worsen the damage and ultimately threaten the integrity of the structure. Karapiro wasn’t exempt from these realities, with damage to the spillway both above and below water.

During 2021, Rockbond worked with Map Projects, Avalon Industrial Services, and NZ Diving Services so start repairing the damaged concrete on the dam spillway.

Between the four companies we came up with long-life repair solutions that were easy to apply, safe for the environment, and manufactured here in NZ. Avalon carried out the above water repairs and NZDS carried out the below water repairs, with Map overseeing the project.
