Project Ark marks the restoration of the iconic Sheraton Christchurch Hotel (formally Noah’s Hotel), a long-standing landmark in the heart of Christchurch. Originally developed in the early 1980s, the building has played a central role in the city’s hospitality and tourism landscape. Following years out of action, due to damage sustained during the Canterbury earthquakes, the project set out to breathe new life into the site while preserving its architectural legacy.

The redevelopment ensures the structure remains a valuable part of Christchurch’s urban fabric, combining modern performance standards with respect for the building’s heritage. By supporting the longevity of this Christchurch icon, the project contributes to the city’s continued recovery and growth as a destination.

The restoration included significant seismic strengthening and remediation works to ensure the building can once again safely welcome guests and operate at modern standards. A key focus of the project was enhancing the structural performance of blade columns throughout the building, many of which required additional shear capacity to meet current design requirements.

Rockbond worked alongside Lewis Bradford, FRP Designs and Renova Solutions to deliver an innovative FRP strengthening solution for the blade columns across every level of the structure. Several columns lacked sufficient internal steel reinforcement, and the initial strengthening approach involved large steel plate installation and flood grouting – a method that would have been both time-consuming and costly.

Through collaboration with project stakeholders and engineers, an alternative fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) solution was adopted. This approach provided the required additional shear capacity while reducing installation complexity, saving both time and cost for the client.

The solution was supported by detailed engineering input and careful on-site installation, ensuring construction challenges were addressed efficiently while maintaining high workmanship standards. The successful implementation of this novel strengthening methodology highlights the value of collaborative thinking and modern materials in seismic strengthening projects.

The completion of the FRP strengthening works represents a key milestone in the restoration of this Christchurch landmark. By combining innovative engineering with practical installation expertise, Project Ark demonstrates how existing structures can be strengthened and revitalised for future use – supporting both heritage preservation and urban renewal.
