Christchurch Stadium, Christchurch NZ
Completion Date:
Mid-2025
Project Details:
One New Zealand Stadium – also known as Te Kaha – is a state-of-the-art, fully covered, 30,000-seat multi-use arena rising in central Christchurch. Bordering Madras, Barbadoes, Hereford, and Tuam streets, it replaces the closed and demolished Lancaster Park, offering the city a modern venue capable of hosting All Blacks tests, international football, global concerts, and more.
The $683 million fixed-price project (the largest ever undertaken by the Christchurch City Council) broke ground in April 2022, and the design was entrusted to Populous and Warren and Mahoney, with BESIX Watpac leading construction alongside local partners like Southbase, Fulton Hogan, Lewis Bradford, and Mott MacDonald.
A key design feature is a partially transparent roof made with Ethylene Tetrafluoroethylene (ETFE), allowing sunlight to nurture the turf while sheltering spectators and events year-round. Construction is progressing well: the steel superstructure is complete, radial roof trusses are significantly in place, exterior cladding is more than halfway done, and seating installation has begun. Site fit-out – including food and beverage outlets, media platforms, and corporate suites – is also advancing, with the project remaining firmly on time and budget for an April 2026 opening.
Rockbond worked with the Team at Connect Group to grout the footings of the large white steel columns that surround the stadium.
These 40 large steel columns on the outside of the Stadium are a key part of its structure as they hold up the roof, which spans 175 metres by 211 metres. Standing up to 32 metres high, they are designed to handle Christchurch’s seismic conditions while giving the stadium its strong, distinctive look. The columns not only support the roof but also symbolise strength, resilience, and modern engineering.
Rockbond’s 5.03HF shrinkage compensated high-strength grout was chosen due to its pumpability and high performance characteristics.
Te Kaha Stadium will be an iconic venue for years to come because of its striking design, world-class facilities, and strong, resilient structure built for Christchurch’s future. It’s a place designed to bring people together – for sport, music, and community events – in a stadium that reflects the city’s spirit and strength.
