Arthur’s Pass Rail Bridge, NZ
Completion Date:
Winter 2022
Project Details:
Arthur’s Pass is more than 900 metres above sea level in Arthur’s Pass National Park in the Southern Alps in New Zealand’s South Island and showcases remarkable engineering, featuring viaducts, bridges, rock shelters and waterfalls redirected into chutes.
The Arthur’s Pass rail bridge replacements were part of significant infrastructure improvement initiatives by KiwiRail on the Midland Line section, located in the rugged terrain of Central Canterbury and on the West Coast of New Zealand’s South Island.
In Central Canterbury, the work involved fully replacing one bridge (43, south of Arthurs Pass) and strengthening another (16, viaduct north of Springfield) as well as ongoing track renewals work in the 8.5km long Otira Tunnel.
On the West Coast, bridge 23 (north of Stillwater) was replaced and two other bridges (13, south of Greymouth and 133, north of Waimangaroa) were strengthened as well as full replacement of four other bridges include (93, 89, and 88 – south of Kokiri) and 56 (north of Otira).
